Meet the team responsible for ensuring the health and safety of you and your home

Date: 24/05/2023

This year we've expanded our compliance team and are investing an additional £1.1m to keep you safe at home.

Our compliance team are knowledgeable and safety conscious. They make sure checks and repairs are completed for the six main areas of compliance: gas safety, electrical safety, fire safety, lift safety, asbestos management, and legionella.

We spoke to Interim Director of Housing, Steve Wilson and Compliance Administrator Deborah Birks who say they're committed to keeping you safe.

“At Staffs Housing we’re committed to making sure our homes are safe for residents”, explains Interim Director of Housing Steve Wilson.

“In the last couple of years there has been pressure on affordable housing providers like us to ensure their residents are safe, after devastating incidents like Grenfell and what happened with Awaab Ishak.

“Our investment in compliance is here to assure our residents that we take their issues seriously, including those relating to health and safety, and that we're devoted to making sure they stay safe at home.

“To drive the focus, we’ve created additional jobs for local experts to join our compliance team.

“Most recently we employed six Compliance Administrators who will be responsible for making sure all repairs and checks have been completed for each area of compliance.

“It makes sure that when customers or contractors get in touch, we have a dedicated expert that can advise and respond.

“Alongside that we’re also investing £1.1m this year on works like safety checks and surveys across all six compliance areas.

“We’re also raising awareness of the ways residents can help to keep themselves safe with a new online safety hub.”

Deborah Birks is one of the six Compliance Administrators; her area of expertise is electrical safety. She joins the team after working for an electricity supplier for over 13 years.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Staffs Housing and being able to put my knowledge and experience of electrical safety to use”, added Deborah.

“I previously worked for a large energy supplier progressing through various admin roles before becoming a team manager. Sadly, I was made redundant when the company decided to close a local office.

“I joined the fabulous Staffs Housing compliance team in March this year.

“I’m passionate about ensuring resident safety by working closely with our contractors, surveyors, and customers.

“I love the role. Honeycomb Group is a great place to work, and I’ve already made friends for life.”
