Making home ownership more affordable for single buyers: Michelle’s storyDate: 25/11/2021
Single buyer Michelle bought a brand-new home at Saxon Gate, Crewe this summer. She needed a home for herself and daughter Casey to live in after a relationship breakdown.
Shared ownership helped Michelle buy a home as a smaller deposit and monthly payment was needed.
“I’d been renting for 16 years but moved in with my partner when we got together.” Explains Michelle. “The relationship didn’t work out and the mortgage was in his name which meant we had to leave. We moved in with Casey’s grandmother and I desperately started looking for a home.
“I was sick of renting and paying into something that wasn’t mine. So I decided to look into my options as a single buyer. I’d seen the Saxon Gate development and really liked it. It wasn’t far away from where we used to live, and it was close to all of Casey’s friends.
“The bank wouldn’t lend me the money to buy a house on my own so I looked into what other buying options were available. I saw an ad on Facebook that said Staffs Housing were selling homes at Saxon Gate through shared ownership and I enquired straight away.
“It was perfect because it meant I only needed to take out a small mortgage and deposit.
“We came to view the house and it was so much more than I expected. It was built to such a high standard and because we were buying with shared ownership it meant the home had carpets and little extras that made it ready to move straight into.
“From then on it was pretty plain sailing! Staffs Housing were great. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing because I was a first-time buyer, so I appreciated all the help and support they provided. They recommended mortgage brokers, solicitors, explained the process and gave me all the information I needed to make sure the house was mine. They really did help to make it as stress-free as possible.
Michelle and Casey moved in this June this year: “We’re all settled in now, and we love it so much. I’m amazed with everything and I can’t find a fault!
“To anyone thinking of buying with shared ownership, I say do it. It’s such an easy way to get on the property ladder. I only needed a 5% deposit which made it super affordable too! Take the plunge, because now I’ve done it, I regret not doing it sooner.”
We’ve just launched our latest shared ownership development in Cheadle, Staffordshire. With two and three bed homes available to buy from £92,500.
