This week our independent living village, Bradeley Village is calling on local people to help and support their team of volunteers to run essential services for older people.

It was built specifically with people over 55 in mind and includes on-site facilities like a shop restaurant, café, and bar. It also offers activities and social groups to residents to make sure they have what they need to live independently at home.

These services are all ran by a team of selfless volunteers who are looking for your support, as Independent Living Manager Michila Goodwin explains.

“Here at Bradeley village our services are run by the community for the community”, said Michila.

“It’s because, at Staffs Housing, we believe we can work together to create homes built around our residents, making sure they are communities people are proud to live in.

“Volunteering is a two-way street. It helps provide services to those that need them, but also helps to connect local people to a community, build skills and confidence, while also creating lasting relationships.

“It helps to improve our community by reducing loneliness and providing someone with a meaningful experience giving back.”

Lynn Hudson, shop manager, is one of the volunteers who currently supports the village and says it’s a rewarding experience that’s helped to improve her life.

“I don’t live in the village, but when I moved to the area over 13 years ago, I was newly retired and needed something to give me purpose again”, said Lynn.

“I was sick of staring at the same four walls, so when I saw an opportunity to volunteer in the village shop, I jumped at the chance. Over a decade has passed and I’m still doing it now.

“It’s been a really rewarding experience for me. It’s given me a community of people that have supported me in good times and bad.

“When I was new to the area, I didn’t know anyone, and it was a great opportunity for me to meet new people and feel less alone and I’d encourage anyone who has some spare time to try it.”

Michila says the Bradeley Village team is supported by 47 volunteers and is now looking for new recruits to help them deliver essential services to residents.

“Whether you have a spare hour, are looking for a purpose, or just want to give back, get in touch to see how you can help”, continued Michila.

“Together we can discuss your availability and skills to see where you could fit into the village and help make a difference to local people.”
