If you are you could be one of thousands of people affected as part of the BBC SD switchover.

To help you understand what this means and how to resolve the issues you’re experiencing, here’s some helpful advice, information, and support details.

This January the BBC announced that they closed their standard definition TV channels on satellite as part of their SD switchover.

It means that anyone with standard definition (SD) equipment will lose access to all BBC channels unless you upgrade your equipment to something which is HD compatible.

Who will be affected?

Anyone with SD TV equipment will lose access to all BBC channels, these are typically older devices from providers like Sky or Freesat.

The BBC says it’s not sure on the number of people affected, but that they are showing a ‘channel closed’ on-screen message to inform viewers if they need to upgrade.

How can I check if I'm affected?

If you’re experiencing the ‘channel closed’ on-screen message when watching BBC channels, then you will need to upgrade your equipment to access BBC channels.

Sky have been in touch with their affected customers. They are also advising that when turning to channel 101, if you see ‘BBC One in SD’ then you’re one of the thousands of people affected.

Freesat are doing something similar, telling customers to turn to channel 799 and a message will appear to let you know whether you’re affected or not.

Where can I go for support?

The BBC are offering support via a helpline:

For vulnerable residents or those aged over 75, the BBC is offering extra support with discounted satellite boxes and are providing in-person visits for anyone requiring assistance. You can find out more about this here.
