Fire safety inspections
Staffs Housing carry out fire safety inspections every 12 months in schemes with internal communal areas. They’re a legal requirement and they make sure we’re meeting the standards set by the government.
What's a fire risk assessment?
A fire risk assessment identifies the fire risks in communal areas like your hallway and stairwell and makes sure there are safety measures in place.
Most importantly the assessment makes sure that everyone remains safe and can escape quickly in the event of a fire.
What does a Fire Risk Assessment look like?
Here's an example of what your scheme Fire Risk Assessment should look like. You should find a copy in your communal area and also receive a copy from our Housing Team once it has been completed.
Don't forget only schemes with communal areas receive Fire Risk Assessments like this. If you live in a home without communal areas but have questions about fire safety get in touch.
Fire safety tips helping you stay safe at home
Hopefully, you’ve never been involved in a fire, but sometimes it’s a lack of understanding that can increase the risk of harm. This information might be scary, but here are some fire facts that most people aren’t aware of that could help to keep you safe in the event of a fire.
- Fire is FAST: it takes less than 30 seconds for a small flame to become a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or engulf it in flames.
- Fire is HOT: heat is more threatening than flames. Room temperature in a fire can reach 100 degrees at floor level and 600 degrees at eye level. Inhaling this super-hot air could cause serious injury or worse.
- Fire is DARK: fires start bright but produce black smoke and finish in complete darkness. This is why we have a clear door policy in some of our schemes, to keep communal areas clear so everyone can get out safely.
- Fire is DEADLY: smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do.
- Plan your ESCAPE: make sure you read all the fire safety documents in your scheme.
