How to be a good neighbour and keep the noise down in your home

Being A Good Neighbour

Being a good neighbour means being considerate of those living around you. One of the most common causes of anti-social behaviour complaints is noise, but don’t worry – there are simple steps you can take to help keep the peace and ensure everyone feels comfortable in their home.

Here are some simple tips to help you avoid causing noise disruptions and be a good neighbour.

  1. Avoid running your washer or dryer late at night
We all know the struggle of having a full washing basket, but running your washing machine or dryer late at night can be pretty noisy, especially if you live in an apartment, in a terraced house, or in a semi-detached home. The last thing anyone wants is a loud spin cycle to interrupt their sleep!

Tip: Try to do laundry during the day, or before 8pm when noise will be less of an issue.

  2. Don’t over-fill your washer or dryer
It might seem like a good idea to throw in as many clothes as possible to save time, but overloading appliances can cause them to have to work harder, which often leads to extra noise and potential damage.

Tip: Stick to the recommended load size for your washer or dryer. Not only will this cut down on noise, but it’ll also help your appliances to last longer and run more efficiently.

  3. Use anti-vibration mats
Washing machines and dryers can make a lot of noise due to their vibrations, especially if they’re older or not properly balanced. This can disturb your neighbours, particularly if they live below or next door to you.

Tip: If you can’t avoid running your appliances late at night due to your schedule or energy tariff, consider investing in an anti-vibration mat. You can buy these from your local DIY store, and they sit underneath your washer or dryer. They help to absorb the vibrations, reduce noise, and prevent damage to your flooring.

  4. Keep noise levels in check
While it’s usually washers or dryers that get the most attention, it’s important to be mindful of your overall noise levels too. Loud music, talking, or TV sounds can travel easily, especially in apartment buildings.

Tip: If you like to listen to music or watch TV late at night, try using headphones or turning the volume down to keep things quiet.

  5. Consider softer floor coverings
If you have hard floors like tile or laminate, you might notice that sounds echo or travel more easily, which can be a bother to your neighbours. A few small changes can make a big difference.

Tip: Add rugs or carpets to high-traffic areas to help absorb noise. It’s a simple change that can make your home quieter and feel more comfortable.

  6. Think about your neighbours’ schedules
We all have different routines, and what might be a good time for you, may not be ideal for someone else. Being aware of your neighbours’ schedules can help you avoid unintentionally disturbing them.

Tip: If you know your neighbour works nights or has kids, try avoiding making noise early in the morning or late at night. A little consideration goes a long way.

  7. Don’t be afraid to speak to your neighbours
If you’re unsure whether something you’re doing is too noisy, just ask! Most neighbours will appreciate the opportunity to chat and may even share helpful tips.

Tip: If you need to do something noisy, give your neighbours the heads-up. A quick “Hey, just so you know…” can help prevent any misunderstandings.

Being mindful of noise in your home doesn’t require major changes – just a little consideration for the people around you. By following these simple tips, you can create a more peaceful environment for everyone. Your neighbours will appreciate it, and you’ll be doing your part to make your community a better place to live.
