Your neighbourhood, your voice: what we heard on our July walkabouts

Vick And Dan

This July, we visited several of our schemes across Leek as part of our monthly walkabout initiative, something we started back in November to stay better connected with you, the people who live in our homes.

These walkabouts are all about listening, being visible, and getting things done. Whether it’s checking for repairs, tackling issues like anti-social behaviour or waste, or just having a chat, we’re here for it all.

But it’s not just about maintenance. It’s about building trust, breaking down barriers, and having real conversations with you about what matters most — your home, your community, your story.

In July we visited Leek, stopping off at Barracks Way, Hargreaves Court, Weslyan Court, Norbury Court, Sneyd Street, Bluestones Court, Brunswick Mill, The Old Mill and St Mary’s Court.

Many of these buildings have fascinating histories — some were once schools or silk mills during Leek’s heyday as a centre for silk production in the 1800s. Now, they’re homes filled with stories of a different kind.

Meet Frank from The Old Mill
Take The Old Mill, for example — once a working silk mill, now a much-loved home to local residents like Frank, who’s lived there for 28 years.

“I never want to leave,” Frank told us. “I love my community — we all look out for each other. There’s only five of us here, but we work together to keep the gardens looking lovely, and when I report anything, it’s sorted fast.”

Frank, a veteran of the Armed Forces and former international coach driver, moved to Leek nearly three decades ago. He still remembers his days travelling the world, from Rio de Janeiro to Portugal and Italy.

“Now I live a peaceful life,” he said. “Thanks to Staffs Housing, I’ve got everything I need right here — in a home that was adapted to fit my needs after I had a hip and knee replacement.”

While we were there, Frank and his neighbours mentioned some ivy growing up the side of the building. We’ve logged the job and are getting it sorted as quickly as we can.

More history on the doorstep
At Brunswick Mill, another former silk mill, we admired the original features that still give the building its character, like the exposed brick staircases, while checking in on the condition of communal areas.

We also stopped by Hargreaves Court, which was once a busy local school. Today, the old playground is a peaceful courtyard where residents relax and hang out their washing. We picked up some communal cleaning tasks while we were there, and spotted the plaque that marks when we converted it into affordable homes in 1995.

Over at St Mary’s Court, with its lovely terraced homes and stunning views of St Mary’s Church, we were able to fix a leaking pipe there and then. We also chatted with residents about how to submit requests if they’d like to make improvements to their homes.

Our walkabouts are more than just a check up
Our monthly walkabouts aren’t just about ticking boxes; they’re about making your voices heard. They help us stay close to the people who matter most, you.

We want to hear your stories, celebrate your communities, and make sure your home is everything it should be. So, if you see us out and about, don’t hesitate to stop us for a chat, we’d love to hear from you.
