Spot the scam: protect yourself from fraudulent calls

Man On The Phone

Scam calls are on the rise – and fraudsters are getting smarter. At Staffs Housing, your safety is our priority.

What is a scam call?

Scam calls are fraudulent, malicious phone calls that present you with false promises or fake outstanding bills to gather your personal information or steal your money. They typically come from individuals impersonating people, companies, or government agencies.

Common signs of a scam call

It might be a scam if:

·         It seems too good to be true – for example, a holiday that’s much cheaper than you’d expect

·         Someone you don’t know contacts you unexpectedly

·         You’ve been asked to transfer money quickly or make a payment in an unusual way

·         You’ve been asked to share personal information – such as passwords, PINs, or a one-time passcode

·         The caller pressures you to act quickly, doesn’t want you to ask questions, or tries to rush or panic you

·         You haven't received written confirmation of what's been agreed

How to protect yourself

Remember that genuine service providers, banks, and the police will never call asking for you to transfer money.

·         Hang up if something feels off: you can always call back using a number you trust.

  • Don’t share personal details: Banks, government agencies, and phone providers will never ask for passwords or PINs over the phone.
  • Block suspicious numbers: If you keep receiving calls from a dodgy number, block it.
  • Be wary of urgent requests: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to manipulate victims. Take a moment to think before responding.
