Moving to Bradeley Village has made an incredible difference to our lives

BV Customer Fern And Her Husband

At Bradeley Village, it’s the people who make the community special — and Fern is one of those people.

Fern has lived at Bradeley Village with her husband for the past ten years. Married since 1959 after meeting as children, their story is one of lifelong love, deep Stoke-on-Trent roots, and the importance of feeling safe at home.

After experiencing a fall in their previous home in Cobridge, Fern and her husband made the decision to move somewhere that would better support their needs.

“The stairs were becoming too much,” Fern explains. “It just made sense to move somewhere we wouldn’t have to struggle.”

Peace of Mind for the Whole Family
For Fern’s family, the move brought reassurance as well as practicality.

Her son told her that knowing she had support around her every day gave him real peace of mind. At Bradeley Village, there’s always someone nearby — whether that’s neighbours looking out for one another or team members checking in. With pull cords fitted in every apartment, residents have added reassurance that help is always within reach.

“If you’re not around, people notice,” Fern says. “If you’re unwell, someone will come and find you. You feel safe here.”

That sense of security has made an incredible difference to Fern and her husband’s lives.

Independence With Community
One of the things Fern values most is the balance Bradeley Village offers.

Residents have their own private apartments — their own space, routines and independence — while also being part of a welcoming and active community.

“We’ve made such good friends here,” Fern shares. “You’ve got your own home, but you’re never lonely.”

Family continues to be at the heart of Fern’s life. Her son and grandchildren visit regularly, filling her home with laughter and what she affectionately calls “a bit of chaos.”

“It’s lovely having them here,” she says.

Moments That Matter
From social gatherings to entertainment, Fern enjoys the activities that bring residents together. The singing shows, in particular, are a firm favourite.

“We love going down to watch and cheer them on,” she says. “It’s brilliant.”

It’s these shared experiences — the everyday conversations, the friendly greetings, the sense that someone is always there — that help create the warm atmosphere residents describe.

A Life Rooted in Stoke
Fern has always lived in Stoke-on-Trent and is proud of her local roots. She left school at 15 to work in the pottery industry as a lithographer, carefully applying printed designs to plates and cups.

“You had to make sure the pattern wasn’t wonky and that it attached properly,” she recalls. “I loved it. We were a really supportive crowd.”

Though the city has changed over the decades, Fern believes its spirit remains the same.

“It’s the people that make Stoke special. There’ll always be someone to greet you with an ‘ay up, duck.’”

When asked what she would say to anyone considering a move to Bradeley Village, Fern doesn’t hesitate.

“Just do it,” she says. “It’s made an incredible difference to our lives.”

At Bradeley Village, stories like Fern’s reflect what matters most — feeling safe, staying connected, and having a place that truly feels like home.
