One of our older people’s villages has been awarded a Gold standard at the Regional Elderly Accommodation Counsel (EAC) Awards 2019.

The awards celebrate the best specialist housing providers for older people, and aim to help shape the future of housing in later life. West End Village (WEV) is one of 300 schemes in the UK to get the top prize.

Resident, Elaine, isn’t surprised by the win. She explains, “Winning the regional award is brilliant, we know it’s a lovely place and we already know it’s the best.

“I enjoy living here because age is nothing; it really is just a number. No matter what events or trips WEV put on, everyone can join in.”

Another resident, Cath, said: “The people here are my extended family, we always know we can rely on each other, because of that and we’re so privileged to live here.

“If anybody’s worried about anything, we know that we can just go to the office to talk it out with the management and you feel a lot better for it.”

Gina Cooper, WEV manager said: “To win the award this year means so much. The voting system  this year allowed not only  residents to vote, it included, staff, visitors to our community hub and contractors who work on site. We appreciate the effort that everyone went to, going on line and filling in voting slips,  and because of that winning means that little bit more.

“It’s nice to know that Stoke and Staffordshire Housing Association has been recognised in the West Midlands for providing Gold Standard Housing with care accommodation for the over 55’s ”

John Galvin, EAC’s Chief Executive, explained the importance of the awards: “Specialist housing for older people plays an enormously significant role in helping them stay independent for longer. The security, support and great communities have a positive impact on individuals and reduce the need for NHS services.”

West End Village are now in the running for the EAC National awards, which is held in Manchester on 21 May 2019.
