We have pledged our support towards Carers Week 2018.

This week we are chatting to Staffs Housing residents who have experienced care or life as a carer. We want to find out how we can support these residents, and whether living within our supported housing can help.

One of residents Margaret has been a carer for 55 years to daughter Janice. They both moved into Rowan Village and have never looked back.

Margaret says: “The village is such a safe environment. Janice can go off to the gym and bingo and I know she is safe. There is always something going on here, and plenty of people to talk to. Since moving here Janice has really come out of her shell!”

Margaret also attends a community outreach group at Rowan Village where she has met many other current or past carers.

The group was created by locals Mary and Sue.

Sue explains: “The outreach group is the perfect place to make new friends, meet people in a similar situation and have a laugh. Before the group, there was nothing like this around but now we are helping people get out of the house and interact with others.”

Another attendee Vera adds: “I have been coming here almost every week for the last 10 years. I cared for my mother and father for seven years and wish there had been somewhere like this. It is a great opportunity for carers to have a change of atmosphere and a little time to relax.”
