If you’ve joined a day trip, dropped into Tech Hour, or noticed a lively new event on the calendar at West End Village, there’s a good chance John’s had a hand in it.
John joined the team six months ago as our dedicated Activities Coordinator, and he’s already made a big impression—bringing people together, sparking ideas, and creating moments that matter.
“I’ve worked in the cinema industry for over 24 years putting on events all over the country. When I saw this role, I thought—why not take everything I’ve learned and put it into something with real meaning? I love working with people, and here, it’s all about that.”
Since arriving at West End Village, John has been busy. Day trips to Llandudno, Southport, and Bury Market have given residents the chance to explore, laugh, and connect.
“These trips are about more than getting out of the village. They’re about enjoying life. In Llandudno, one of our residents, Ron, spotted a piano on the street and started playing ‘She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain’. The whole group gathered round and joined in. It was such a special moment—and just one of many.”
All trips are subsidised to keep them affordable, and they’ve quickly become one of the most loved parts of the calendar.
But it’s not just about going out—John is helping bring new opportunities right to residents' doors. One of his standout ideas? Tech Hour.
“I’ve always been tech-savvy from working in cinemas, so I offer a drop-in where residents can ask anything—whether it’s fixing a phone, sorting out Wi-Fi, or getting a video call working. It’s a small thing, but for someone who relies on tech to connect with family, it can mean the world.”
John’s also helped kickstart a pool league across our West End, Bradeley, and Rowan villages—bringing together residents from different communities through friendly competition.
“One resident told me the pool league helped him meet people from outside the village and gave him something to look forward to each week. That’s the whole point—to help people feel part of something bigger.”
Looking ahead, John is excited for the return of the Christmas Fayre and the much-loved Turkey & Tinsel Night, along with plans for a big summer BBQ and plenty of new activities shaped by residents’ ideas.
“If I haven’t met you yet, come and say hi! I usually work Monday to Thursday and I’m always up for a chat. I want the events and activities here to reflect what our residents actually enjoy. So don’t be shy—let’s shape West End Village together.”
John’s energy, warmth and passion for people are just part of what makes West End Village such a special place to live.
Here, independent living isn’t just about having your own front door—it’s about having the freedom to live life your way, with the support and community around you when you want it. Whether it's joining in with a day trip, dropping by for Tech Hour, or simply having someone like John to share a laugh with, there’s always something going on to keep life full of connection and possibility.
As part of Staffs Housing, West End Village is built on the belief that everyone deserves a quality, affordable home they can feel proud of. And with modern apartments, on-site amenities, and a thriving social calendar, many residents say it’s not just a home—it’s the start of something new.
