Keeping you safe in your home: why it’s vital to attend safety appointments

Picture2

At Staffs Housing, your safety is our top priority. That’s why we carry out a range of essential health and safety checks in your home. These inspections help us make sure your home remains a safe, secure place to live — not just for you, but for your neighbours and the wider community too.

We understand life gets busy, but it’s crucial that you attend these appointments or respond when we contact you to arrange them. Missing or ignoring these checks could put your safety at risk and may mean we have to take further action to access your home.

What safety checks are we talking about?
We carry out a wide range of important compliance and safety checks, including:
•    Gas safety checks
•    Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR)
•    Fire door inspections
•    Asbestos inspections
•    Fire risk assessments
•    Stair lift inspections
•    Damp and mould checks
•    And other legally required health and safety inspections

These checks aren’t optional — they’re a legal requirement. We’re bound by law to carry them out, and for good reason. A faulty boiler or damaged fire door could lead to serious incidents if left unchecked.

Can’t be in? Send someone you trust
We know it’s not always easy to be at home during a scheduled appointment. If you can’t attend, you can nominate someone you trust — a family member, friend, or neighbour — to let us in on your behalf.

Just let us know in advance, and we’ll make the necessary arrangements. What’s most important is that we gain access to carry out these checks and ensure your home is safe.

What happens if you don’t give us access?
If we can’t get access to your home to carry out these vital checks, we may be left with no choice but to take legal steps to gain entry. This is always a last resort, but it’s something we will do if we’re unable to ensure your home is safe.

“These inspections are not just a tick-box exercise — they save lives. We have a legal and moral duty to carry out these checks, and we need your cooperation to do that. Please respond to appointment letters, answer our calls, or get in touch to rearrange if needed. We’re here to work with you to keep your home safe.” — Kath Ing, Head of Property, Staffs Housing
