Electrical safety guide

We complete electrical safety assessments in our homes every five years and regularly check communal electrics to make sure they are safe for you to use too.

Here are some of the things you can do to help make sure you stay safe at home:

  1. Report all electrical faults as soon as you spot them. You can report them to us by emailing hello@staffshousing.org.uk, filling out an online repairs form here, calling to let us know, or reporting the issue using our customer portal.
  2. Always allow access for repairs or safety assessments. Letting us carry out an electrical safety check is part of your tenancy agreement so you’ll need to give us access or get in touch to change your appointment if you can’t make it.
  3. Make sure all electrical repairs are completed by us or a trained professional.

Many of the appliances in your home are electric so it's important you regularly maintain them and make sure they are safe to use.

Here are some of the things to look out for when using electrical appliances:

  1. Make sure your plug sockets are not overloaded
  2. Ensure plug sockets are not damaged
  3. Check that visible leads and cables are in good condition
  4. Check that your light fittings are not visibly damaged
  5. Don't store combustible material around fuse boxes, electricity meters, or electrical outlets
  6. Don't use the top of your microwave for extra storage
  7. Never trail cables under carpets or rugs
  8. Don't take electrical items into the bathroom
  9. Always switch things off when you're not using them
